A reevaluation of the late quaternary sedimentation in todos os Santos Bay (BA), Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
LESSA,GUILHERME C.; BITTENCOURT,ABÍLIO C.S.P.; BRICHTA,ARNO; DOMINGUEZ,JOSÉ M. L..
Todos os Santos Bay is a large (<img ALIGN="BOTTOM" BORDER="0" SRC="http:/img/fbpe/aabc/v72n4/0052img1.gif" ALT="$ \approx$"> 1000 km²), structurally controlled tidal bay in northeast Brazil. Three main drainage basins debouch into the bay, providing a mean freshwater discharge of 200 m³/s (prior to 1985), or less than 1% of the spring tidal discharge through the bay mouth. Based on the result of several sedimentological studies performed in the 1970's, five surface sedimentary facies were identified inside the bay, namely i) transgressive siliciclastic marine sand facies; ii) transgressive bay sand-mud facies; iii) a transgressive carbonate marine sand facies; iv) regressive bay-mud facies, and v) regressive fluvial sand facies. The spatial...

Application of shallow seismic profiling to study riverbed architectural facies: a case study of the Tocantins river (Pará - Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Ianniruberto,Marco; Campos,José E.G.; Araújo,Vitto C.M..
To date, the vast majority of river sedimentology study has relied on two main categories of observation: direct observation of shallow trenches, cut faces and cores or geophysical survey on dry and shallow regions of braid bars. In this study, a sub-bottom profiler was used to investigate the stratigraphy of the lower course of the Tocantins River in the Amazon region, between the city of Tucuruì and the village of Nazaré dos Patos. The interest in this specific region lies on the possible variation of the fluvial regime due to the installation of the dam of the Tucuruì hydroelectric plant and the perspective that such river would become navigable as soon as the canal lock will be completed. Collected data show a detailed variety and complexity of...

Características estratigráficas y morfodinámicas de la franja litoral Caribe colombiana (Sector Barranquilla (Bocas de Ceniza) - Flecha de Galerazamba) OceanDocs
Molina-M., A.; Molina-M., C.; Giraldo-O., L.; Barrera-O., R..
The geologic (stratigraphic) and morphodynamic characteristics throughout 76 km of the coastal profile of the Colombian Caribbean, including those between Barranquilla (Bocas de Ceniza) and the spit of Galerazamba are described. The sections of the coast that have been affected by erosive events and those with sedimentary accretion are described. Some of them are associated to both natural and anthropic phenomena. Geologically, the coastal edge is defined by sedimentary rocks, weakly consolidated sediments and inconsolidated sediments, that include ages from the upper Paleocene to the Recent. From the point of view of the evaluation of the coast in terms of stability and instability, the high coasts are classified as: Critic zones (Punta Sabanilla,...

Constraining the age of the last geomagnetic reversal from geochemical and magnetic analyses of Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean sediments ArchiMer
Valet, Jean-pierre; Bassinot, Franck; Simon, Quentin; Savranskaia, Tatiana; Thouveny, Nicolas; Bourlés, Didier L.; Villedieu, Anouk.
We studied four marine sediment records of the Matuyama–Brunhes geomagnetic reversal from four sites located in the Indian, Atlantic and western Pacific oceans. The results combine paleomagnetic, cosmogenic nuclide beryllium (10Be) and oxygen isotope analyses that were performed on the same samples in order to avoid any stratigraphic bias. The three records from the equatorial Indian Ocean and North Atlantic Ocean did not reveal any offset between the authigenic 10Be/9Be ratio (Be-ratio) peak and the interval of low relative paleointensity (RPI) that characterizes the reversal. The lower and upper limits of transitional directions are also concomitant with the increased atmospheric 10Be production that accompanied the geomagnetic dipole intensity decrease....

Contribution to the stratigraphy of the onshore Paraíba Basin, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rossetti,Dilce F.; Góes,Ana M.; Bezerra,Francisco H.R.; Valeriano,Márcio M.; Brito-Neves,Benjamim B.; Ochoa,Felipe L..
Several publications have contributed to improve the stratigraphy of the Paraíba Basin in northeastern Brazil. However, the characterization and distribution of sedimentary units in onshore areas of this basin are still incomplete, despite their significance for reconstructing the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the South American passive margin. This work provides new information to differentiate among lithologically similar strata, otherwise entirely unrelated in time. This approach included morphological, sedimentological and stratigraphic descriptions based on surface and sub-surface data integrated with remote sensing, optically stimulated luminescence dating, U+Th/He dating of weathered goethite, and heavy mineral analysis. Based on this study, it...

Environmental change in the Sea of Okhotsk during the last 1.1 million years ArchiMer
Nurnberg, D; Tiedemann, R.
On the basis of two sedimentary records from the central Sea of Okhotsk, we reconstruct the closely coupled glacial/interglacial changes in terrigenous flux, marine productivity, and sea ice coverage over the past 1.1 Myr. The correspondance of our sedimentary records to the China loess grain size record ( China loess particle timescale, CHILOPARTS) suggests that environmental changes in both the Sea of Okhotsk area and in SE Asia were closely related via the Siberian atmospheric high-pressure cell. During full glacial times our records point to a strong Siberian High causing northerly wind directions, the extension of the sea ice cover, and a reduced Amur River discharge. Deglacial maxima of terrigenous flux were succeeded by or synchronous to...

Evolution of the danube deep-sea fan since the last glacial maximum: New insights into Black Sea water-level fluctuations ArchiMer
Constantinescu, Adriana; Toucanne, Samuel; Dennielou, Bernard; Jorry, Stephan; Mulder, T.; Lericolais, Gilles.
The Danube Deep-Sea Fan (NW Black Sea) is one of the most developed deep-sea sediment depositional systems in Europe. Although the morphology and the architecture have been widely described in the past years, little is known about the stratigraphy of this depositional system. For the late Quaternary, this results from the lack of significant stratigraphic markers, the scarcity of radiocarbon ages and the difficulty in constraining reservoir ages. Recent robust quantification of reservoir ages has allowed the construction of a new stratigraphic framework for the Black Sea from the end of the last glacial period to the Holocene, thus giving the opportunity to correlate sedimentological and geochemical features previously described on the NW Black Sea margin...

Factors controlling margin instability during the Plio-Quaternary in the Gela Basin (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Gauchery, Tugdual; Rovere, Marzia; Pellegrini, Claudio; Cattaneo, Antonio; Campiani, Elisabetta; Trincardi, Fabio.
This study presents novel findings on the Pliocene and Quaternary evolution of the Gela Basin (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea), an area recording the interaction between tectonics, climate change at a Milankovitch and sub-Milankovitch timescales, and dynamic water masses exchange between the eastern and western Mediterranean Sea. The calibration of seismic profiles with exploration boreholes allowed for the refining the chronostratigraphic framework of the Gela Basin and highlighted the main phases of margin growth. Since the Pliocene, the margin has recorded the deposition of 100 m high shelf-edge clinothems, accompanied by sediment drifts on the slope and mass-transport deposits (MTDs), possibly triggered by seismic activity. Through the...

Flow-by-flow chemical stratigraphy and evolution of thirteen Serra Geral Group basalt flows from Vista Alegre, southernmost Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pinto,Viter M; Hartmann,Léo A.
The geochemical characterization of thirteen Serra Geral Group flows in the Vista Alegre region (RS-SC), southern Brazil, displays the homogeneous basaltic composition near 50 wt.% SiO2. Each of the five basal flows (Pitanga-type, high-Ti/Y ~600, TiO2 > 3 wt.%) and eight upper flows (Paranapanema-type, medium Ti/Y ~400, TiO2 > 2 wt.%) can be identified from their chemical composition; sets of flows have parallel variation in chemical composition. The flow-by-flowcorrelation in four sections shows the horizontal position of the flows in three profiles and an approximately 200-m downdrop of the Itapiranga block with respect to the Frederico Westphalen block. The world-class amethyst geode mineralization and the systematic presence of native copper in...

Geologic conceptual model of the municipality of Sete Lagoas (MG, Brazil) and the surroundings Anais da ABC (AABC)
GALVÃO,PAULO; HIRATA,RICARDO; CORDEIRO,ARNALDO; BARBATI,DANIELA; PEÑARANDA,JORGE.
ABSTRACT The study area is located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, among the municipalities of Pedro Leopoldo, Matozinhos, and Sete Lagoas, with Velhas River as the eastern boundary. It is located in the São Francisco Craton, where carbonated argillo-arenaceous sediments are emplaced giving origin to the Bambuí Group, in the São Francisco Basin. Despite the geological knowledge previously developed, the region needs work on integration and detailing of such information. For this reason, the main objective was to contribute to the quality of the geologic cartography, the spatial distribution, and the structural framework geometry. Thus, geologic mapping, aerial photography interpretation, and evaluation of 270 lithologic well profiles were carried...

Geophysical characterization of bottom simulating reflectors in the Fairway Basin (off New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific), based on high resolution seismic profiles and heat flow data ArchiMer
Nouze, Herve; Cosquer, Emmanuel; Collot, Julien; Foucher, Jean-paul; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Lafoy, Yves; Geli, Louis.
High-resolution reflection and refraction seismic data were collected in 2004 to investigate, in further detail than allowed by pre-existing low resolution seismic data, the nature of a Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR) that extends over a broad area of the Fairway Basin, a rifted, continental structure located on the eastern flank of the Lord Howe Rise, to the southwest of New Caledonia. Two main reflectors are documented: the shallower (RN) mimics the seafloor and has a negative polarity while the deeper (RP) does not always mimic the seafloor and has a positive polarity. Using the existing regional seismic lines, we can show that reflector RN can be continuously followed up to DSDP 208 drill hole site. Reflector RP is discontinuous and cannot be traced...

Holocene biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental changes in the Black Sea based on calcareous nannoplankton ArchiMer
Giunta, Simona; Morigi, Caterina; Negri, Alessandra; Guichard, Francois; Lericolais, Gilles.
In this study, detailed micropaleontological analyses were carried out on 270 samples from eight piston cores collected in the Black Sea. The primary goal was to elucidate the Late Quaternary evolution of the Black Sea, specifically to refine its biostratigraphy and to explore the Holocene paleoenvironmental changes. Three intervals were recognized in all the cores studied, irrespective of whether they were from the basin or the shelf. These intervals are characterized, from old to young, by the spotty occurrence, the presence and the local acme of Emiliania huxleyi respectively. Moreover, the species Braarudosphaera bigelowii is, in contrast to the younger units, absent in the oldest unit. The co-occurrence of the two marine species E. huxleyi and B....

Landscape evolution and depositional processes in the Miocene Amazonian Pebas lake/wetland system: evidence from exploratory boreholes in northeastern Peru. Naturalis
Wesselingh, F.P.; Guerrero, J.; Räsänen, M.E.; Romero Pittmann, L.; Vonhof, H.B..
This study of the type and scales of depositional processes and landscape development in western Amazonia during the Miocene is based on the description and interpretation of three boreholes from the Marañon basin (Peru). The Miocene Pebas Formation, and the overlying Marañon Formation and underlying Chambira Formation are lithologically characterised. An age calculation model indicates an Oligocene age for the Chambira Formation, and an Early – early late Miocene age for the Pebas Formation. The base of the Chambira Formation is placed at a sequence boundary and corresponds to the beginning of a regression. The succession was deposited in floodplains included in a RST and a LST under a seasonal climate with a pronounced dry season. The base of the Pebas...
